This piece was retired but there are a limited number still available."It was color we were concerned with; often bright, strange, mostly opaque where the outside was dramatically contrasted with the inside," recalls
Dale Chihuly. While the artist's
Seaforms pioneered the use of optic molds in the glassblowing process to create ribs and to strengthen the thin-walled glass, it was the
Macchias that offered Chihuly the liberty to experiment with color in endless combinations.
This Portland Press 2004 Studio Edition,
Starlight Seaform Macchia, exhibits the transition from color contrasts and curvature often found in the artist's
Seaform series to his
Macchia series. Specks and lines cover the midnight blue exterior of this handblown work. A deep orange soaks the interior, opening to clear at the base, revealing a light green spiral. A yellow lip wrap accentuates its wavy contours. This otherworldly Studio Edition measures approximately ten inches across and is signed by Chihuly.
Accompanying this work is a Plexiglas vitrine with black base and the hardcover Portland Press publication
Chihuly alla Macchia. This book offers 104 color images of the artist's work and an introduction by art historian Richard Hobbs.
Conveying elegance with color and form,
Starlight Seaform Macchia is a work displaying an intriguing individuality.
