SEAGREEN MACCHIA PAIR, 2005

In response to Dale Chihuly’s Macchia series, curator Henry Geldzahler states, “Faced with the bountiful color...and the ampleness of their volumes, one can only thrill at their unerring poise, caught as they are midway between a soap bubble and a sculpture.” Exhibiting the scalloped shape and whirling body wraps also found in the artist’s earlier Seaforms, Macchia achieve a strong sense of motion that is intensified by their rich layers of color.

Merlot flecks accentuate the phosphorescent blue green bodies of Seagreen Macchia Pair. A sunny yellow lip wrap gracefully traces the fluted rims of this spirited duo. The larger element is skillfully “blown through,” a technique that creates a color gradation from opaque emerald to translucent crystal, which allows light to reach the second form nestled within.

Each handblown Seagreen Macchia Pair measures approximately ten inches across. The smaller of the two pieces carries Chihuly’s signature. The ensemble includes a Plexiglas vitrine and the Portland Press publication Chihuly alla Macchia, a compact book that includes an informative essay by art historian Robert Hobbs and 104 photographs.

Seagreen Macchia Pair, a 2005 Portland Press Studio Edition, illustrates Chihuly’s sensibility for the suppleness of glass in a fusion of form and color that creates a harmonious work.
