Dale Chihuly drew directly onto the key woodblock with litho crayon. Key block and additional color woodblocks were then carved by Sheila Coppola of Sidereal Press. Initial plate was run with teal, followed successively by plates of rich, metallic gold and black.

Chihuly chose a simple-style blonde hardwood frame with a flat profile, 1" wide and 1" deep. Prints are floated with a 1" ivory mat border.

Printing Technique: Woodcuts

Woodcuts are the earliest printing technique, dating from the late medieval period. The artist draws a composition on a wood block and then cuts away the areas of the block not covered by the design. The raised area of the design is then inked with a dauber or roller and transferred to paper using a press.
