Dale Chihuly drew directly onto the key woodblock with litho crayon. Key block and additional color woodblocks were then carved by Sheila Coppola of Sidereal Press. The initial plates were run with two different shades of chartreuse, followed by plates of aqua creating the background. A final plate of black completes this beautiful print.

Chihuly chose a simple-style blonde hardwood frame with a flat profile, 1" wide and 1" deep. Prints are floated with a 1" ivory mat border.

Printing Technique: Woodcuts

Woodcuts are the earliest printing technique, dating from the late medieval period. The artist draws a composition on a wood block and then cuts away the areas of the block not covered by the design. The raised area of the design is then inked with a dauber or roller and transferred to paper using a press.
