During a 1990 trip to Tokyo, Chihuly was reminded of the Japanese fishing floats he used to collect on the beach as a kid in the Pacific Northwest. Not too long after, Chihuly began the
Float series, which is the largest piece of glass Chihuly creates in terms of volume. The first lithograph to feature the
Float series,
Free Float is a three color print in which four additional layers of handwork are added creating both texture and depth. The red interior is accentuated with acrylic paint in fluorescent magenta and a bright iridescent red pearl. Spirals of silver are layered with Chihuly custom black forming the body of the float and a striking red signature finishes the print.
Free Float is a perfect balance of the energetic lines and bold colors often found in Chihuly’s unique drawings.
