In the catalog accompanying Dale
Chihuly's first retrospective show to travel in
Australia, essayist Geoffrey Edwards
places the artist within the context of
ancient Syrian and Egyptian glass dating
to the dawn of the millennium. At the end
of the 20th century, Edwards evokes the
former's sensuous forms and the latter's
rich color and patterning. In addition to
illustrating in full-color the glass works
and drawings in the exhibition, there are
written descriptions of the various series
Chihuly has created from the 1974
Soft Cylinders to the 1992
Pilchuck Stumps.
Details of the artist's energetic
drawings
are reproduced full-scale as the end papers
of the catalog designed by the
award-winning graphic designer W.
Joseph Gagnon. A brief chronology and
listing of selected museum collections
completes this succinct but
comprehensive view of Chihuly's career
through 1993.
